coronavirus pandemic

Coronaviruses are viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. Coronaviruses in humans can cause respiratory tract infections that can be mild, such as some cases of the common cold (among other possible causes, predominantly rhinoviruses), and others that can be lethal, such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Symptoms in other species vary: in chickens, they cause an upper respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea. There are yet to be vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat human coronavirus infections.

Since early 2020, a human form of the virus has spread quickly around the globe and caused governments to have to order shut downs and to temporarily close businesses. Italy and the US have so far been the worst affected and Europe is described as the epicentre of the pandemic. The globe has not encountered a disease as contagious as COVID-19 for a while and how badly the virus will affect the health of citizens as well as the health of the economy is not yet fully appreciated. What we do know is that if we don’t take drastic action, the virus will become endemic and will take far more lives than it needs to. Businesses, especially smaller entities, will be badly affected as closures and a slow down in the economy will affect those smaller SME’s and businesses more acutely.
